Poverty Tourist

I don’t need to travel to Bangladesh to be a poverty tourist. Â I am a poverty tourist everyday. Â I travel down the block to learn about the pain and suffering and love and joy of others, so I can report back to you. Â Â And to myself.

You can be a poverty tourist too. Â Just walk outside.

Here’s are a few tips to help you while you take your journey.

Some people are easy to read. Â They write it out for you, even shout it out for you. Â Their hopes and dreams literally jump off their skin.

Others hide and express themselves in signals of smoke. Â Don’t be fooled. Â Â It is the quiet ones who are the most profound.

Don’t be distracted by those trying to manipulate you with words and images. Â Â The truth is not there.

No matter what anyone says, we ALL have a story to tell.

We all need to be connected, to have personal ties.

No one wants to be alone. Even in a crowd.

Elvis.Â The Beatles.Â Prince.Â Â In every generation, a new musical artist comes on the scene who so energizes his audience during his straight-from-the-heart performance that whoever was lucky enough to be in attendance is riveted to his every word.Â Such was the case last night during the ground-breaking act of rapper Master Crazy Dude on the MTA Queens 23 bus at 2AM.

Using his unique beatbox technique, Master Crazy Dude repeated his raw, intense, lyrics over and over again until everyone on the bus, passengers of all colors and creeds, were united in moving t0 the front of the bus, in fear for their lives.

But not when I hit him with a bottle of booze

The vibrant musical energy of the street is alive in New York City, which makes this the greatest city in the world (just keep it away from the condos on the Upper East Side).
