Holiday Songs

Sophia sings “Hanukkah.”  (a real trouper because she still has a cold and is hoarse)

Neil sings “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.”  (with no excuse for my voice)

    Sophia–you have a lovely voice.

    Neil–you, um, seem very enthusiastic.

    Happy Hanukkah!

  2. LisaBinDaCity

    Nice job Sophia!

Neil, don’t quit your day job 😉

    Happy Hanukkah!

    W O W ! ! ! !

Don’t you feel so naked now having let us hear your VOICES?!!! 😉

That was SO COOL! I liked hearing the Hanukkah song cause I’ve never heard a Hanukkah song before. And wow, Sophia is talented! Tell us what she CAN’T do, okay?

And I was totally diggin that NY accent, Neil! Nice job all around. 🙂

    Happy Holidays!

  4. Leese

    Great job, both of you!

  5. Leesa

    Those were great!
How very brave of you, Neil 🙂

Bruce Springstein doesn’t stand a chance. Bruce Springsteen doesn’t have to worry about anything. Happy Holidays!

  7. Student Nurse

Very nice you two. Thanks for sharing.

  8. Merujo

The Hanukkah song rocked! And the NY-accented “Santa Claus” sounds like it could have been the background for some holiday animation on “Sesame Street.” Excellent.

I just realized, Sophia and you might be a treasure trove of L.A.-Russkiy intelligence for me. I’m coming out to Los Angeles for a weekend in January (to hear my friend Thomas Dolby play at House of Blues in WeHo.) I’m dying for some decent Russian food. Any place in WeHo where I can get some? (I may just go to the strip mall Uzbek place I’ve been to before, if all else fails, and have a “former Soviet moment.” God bless L.A.)

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, and all that good stuff,

Merujo (in the rain in suburban DC)

    OY!

It’s a Christmas miracle! Baby Jesus thanks you Neil. (Well, he thanks you for no longer singing.) Do you really sound like that, Neil? I think I need to give you a ring to find out.

Sophia, that was absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for sharing that with us.

Happy Hanukkah you two! (And anyone else reading this who celebrates.) And Merry Christmas for those who celebrate that. I love that we could celebrate them together today.

I couldn’t hear but I bet it ws cool.

I just learned that Dec. 25th is a special day this year because not only is it Christmas Day, but also for this year, the first night of Hanukkah happens to be tonight. And all across the world, Jewish people are stuck between the choice of having Chinese Food and a Movie (typical Dec. 25th Jewish activity I now hear.) and Latkes. (I heard all this on NPR today, and of course was thinking of you and Sophia, Neil.)

So, what I’d like to know is whether you chose Chinese or Latkes. Or is there such a thing as Chinese Latkes, which might make the whole decision easier!?

    Any insights on this delimma?

  13. Bill

Well that was very odd. Nice, but odd. And that”s okay because odd is nice.

HEAVEN! That was like finding some lost Beatles tapes! I could listen to Sophia’s accent for hours on end. I love when you can hear someone smiling in their voice, she should travel the country singing to children to cheer them up. I don’t know why but I was shocked by Neil’s New York accent, I had a completely different voice in my head.

That was a great Hanukkah present guys, thank you! And now I have to go listen to both songs again…

  16. ashbloem

    That was GREAT!

I’m also in love with Sophia’s voice. That’s pretty sexy.

    As is Neil’s, of course!

What a pair you guys are.

  17. Tatyana

    Best. Post. Ever.
I disagree with above comments: Neil, you’re a wonderful singer. Not stage-ready, like Sophia, but I’d love to be your audience.

  18. danielle

You definitely sound like you belong in New York Neil! Enjoyed both songs. Thanks. Very entertaining.

  19. TWM

    Wonderful.

A great way to go into the New Year.

  20. akaky

Neil, vis-a-vis your rendition of Santa Claus is coming to town; it was interesting, I thought, but you should hang on to your day job, just in case. Sophia sounded wonderful, assuming, of course, that there really is a Sophia.

  21. Laura

You sound like a mafia hit man, Neil. You betta watch out, you betta not cry, you betta not pout…or I’ll break your kneecaps. Ha! I’m calling the producers for ~The Sopranos~ right now to see about a guest spot for you…
    ~L.

  22. Pearl

Brava, Sophia! And Neil, that “Claus” is very heavy on the Noo Yawk accent. Somehow I thought that when I clicked on your name to hear your song, you’d pull some shtick on us and it’s be Harry Connick, Jr. doing the voiceovers…

  23. TJ

It had a good beat, I could dance to it…I give it a 92.

    Happy Holidays!

  24. Tanisha

    Happy Chanukah Neilochka and Sophie.

    Chag Sameach!!

  25. cruisin-mom

Whoever that is playing the part of Sophia is wonderful…the Russian accent and all. And picking Joe Pesci to play the part of you, Neil, was a stroke of genius.

  26. Neil

I guess you never really hear your own accent. I always visualized myself sounding like Patrick Stewart or Ian McKellen.

  27. Elvira Black

    Note to Modigli:

The closest thing to Chinese latkes are scallion pancakes, I think.

    Nice job, N and S.

  28. akaky

How can you visualize the way you sound, or did I cut biology class that day?

  29. Neil

Akaky, have you ever heard of the sixth sense?

  30. akaky

Yes, I have; it’s that strange creepy feeling I get when I’m at a family gathering and I know, just know to the depths of my being, that one of my mooching relatives is trying to manuever me into a corner so he can ask me for money.

  31. Jacynth

Ahh..this reminds me of my family. My mom always called it: Hanukmas. And then the OC ripped it off and called it: Chrismakah. I’m still not sure which I like better…but I do know that celebrating both of them whilst growing up was a good way for me to rack up the presents!

  32. jaimie

    Sophia sounds good!

  33. Heather B.

    Sophia, you were excellent
Neil, well, you have a really great blog 😉

  34. bettyonthebeach

You guys, that was so awesome! What a clever idea! It’s cool to hear a fellow bloggers voice – love the Queens accent!

  35. subgirl

    very nice!

  36. erin

    I feel a holiday tear welling up….

😉 I’m sorry about all that drama with your blog being parodied. I think that’s how you know you’re getting famous. People care enough to hate. 🙂

  37. psychotoddler

Crap. I just realized I used the same Menorah picture. I didn’t steal it from you, I swear. I stole it from some weird foreign language photography site.
