It seems like you learned something though- especially noticing your discomfort during the silent meal. That speaks volumes! (Excuse the pun.) I know I have mentioned this to you before but check out "Anxious to Please". I think you would get a lot out of reading it (from one people pleaser to another). I get anxious like that. I am probably a mix of you and that tense guy from your class. ;-)

I find it easy to "disappear" into myself in any setting. I often feel invisible. What I'm finding more difficult as I get older is engaging with people in group settings, something I did much more easily and comfortably when I was younger.

It is difficult for me to focus when there are others around, especially when I sense their agenda. This affects my work patterns. I work best when I am in the midst of an anonymous crowd, like in Starbucks , or locked in my office like a cage, with the blinds drawn. The minute Sophia walks inside the room and sits on the couch next to me, my focus turns to mush. I KNOW she is in the room.

You may not have learned anything about you, but I have enjoyed learning about you.

i would have never made it through lunch in silence either. silent meditation i can do. quiet while eating, everyone would hear my tmj joint popping (shudder).

i do want to explore a day with her in the future. and on the bowing thing...i have practiced yoga for years and it is just recently that i have found the place in myself to be comfortable with the bow at the end of class when we say namaste. i used to just nod my head a bot but now i feel like going forehead to floor when we close. not sure exactly what shifted but it had to do with me, not the class.

Neil, I go away for a while and I come back to a new format and news of Sophia's mom passing and a post about you doing Zen meditation! I am proud of you for trying it and sticking with it for a day. I am also sorry for your loss. xoxo

"Or, more honestly, I felt the discomfort of the others, like rays of negative energy surrounding me, and I had an overwhelming need to make a joke, to break the ice, and to make everyone feel at home, not for their sake, but for my own."

You are sensitive to other people's feelings. You need to put up some mental shields to protect yourself from "negative energy". You already use physical shields, like being anonymous in a crowd, or barricading yourself in your office. xx

Wow, your lunchtime epiphany is eerily familiar. I am so tuned into the people around me I catch myself taking on their inflection and mannerisms. And giving in, oh...the giving in......

I am only a dabbler in Buddhism but have thoroughly enjoyed some of Pema Chodron's teachings. "Getting Unstuck" might appeal to you- it's on iTunes. She's delightful.

I did a meditation retreat once. I couldn't focus at all...I managed to think about everything under the sun other than myself.

i think you did an excellent job of making the experience "authentic.."

How'd ya like that---throwing the authentic in there? huh? ;)
