I read the article three times and still can’t figure out how it qualifies as news. The first two paragraphs are common knowledge; the last admits that no one knows a thing. Did someone’s cousin need a summer job or something?
i don’t drink coffee, i switched to decaf tea about four years ago. caffeine is the devil. sunshine on the other hand, that’s the way to start your day.
Ok, as a science geek I have to weigh in that it looks like they just found that high caffeine use tended to co-occur with depression. That doesn’t mean it caused it. Perhaps people that are depressed and feeling lethargic tend to self-medicate with large doses of caffeine. Or people who don’t get enough sleep and drink lots of coffee end up burned out and depressed.
I’m going to file this under the “Everything is going to kill, unless it doesn’t” heading in which I have all of the other FDA research saved. They’ve been consistently flip-flop-tastic about red meat and eggs for the last six decades, so it’s refreshing to finally see that caffeine is now, officially, the devil.
I agree with the correlation is not causation statement. Also, there seems to be a correlation between coffee use and decreased Diabetes risk. So, I’ll be a depressed crazy person but I won’t get diabetes. It’s a trade off.
I switched from a latte addiction to Earl Grey addiction to clear up my skin and it helped. Then when I was put on hormones for a medical condition, I had to cut back on the tea, because they triple the half life of caffeine and I went to the emergency room thinking I was having a heart attack one night. (There’s not much left I can party on!) I’m trying the green food drinks now which seem to give me a boost…

It’s always fuckin’ something…
Now tell me: Have I had my coffee already, not yet, or have I been drinking it too long?

I thought it was all the rap music my kids play. Guess that applies to my Diet Soda too. Now I’m really sad

By question girl on 06.14.07 1:01 pm
Well, I’m fucked. I guess I already knew that, though.

I think that pretty much sums up the reason for my personality…

Yummmmmmm, I’ll take the risk. Besides, it has antioxidants:)

That’s why I gravitate towards tea!

meh.
It’s like they recycle these doom and gloom stories. There’s one from the BBC last March that said it didn’t do anything.

If I was a conspiracy theorist I’d say they alternate the “it’s great for you” “it’s horrible for you” stories just see how many people spin.

Correlation DOES NOT establish causation!
Coffee anyone?
By nelumbo on 06.14.07 6:02 pm
Great! I can’t wait to tell this to my coffee-addicted parents who tease me endlessly about the fact that I don’t drink coffee.
By wordgirl on 06.14.07 6:06 pm
I’m a tea man. But the occasional white chocolate mocha slips by.
I get cranky without my tea.

Top me up another cuppa Joe, there, will ya?
By Dana on 06.15.07 6:42 am
Oh great. Just one more thing. But, on the other hand, it’s also another good excuse.

coffee brings my personality into coherence.
better a coherent depressive than an incoherent optimist.
